An effort to recall Valerie Fisher from her position on the Papillion-La Vista Public Schools school board in Nebraska did not go to a vote in 2021. Recall supporters did not submit signatures by the deadline on December 20, 2021.[1]

The recall effort began in November 2021. To get the recall on the ballot, recall supporters would have had to submit 7,229 signatures.[2]

Recall supporters said the recall was a reaction to the board's handling of a fundraiser to build a physical education space at Papillion La Vista South High School. Recall supporters initially sought to include board members Brian Lodes, SuAnn Witt, and Fred Tafoya, but they were too close to their term-end dates to be included in the effort. Fisher said that she thought the board handled the situation properly.[2][3]

Fisher won re-election in 2020.[3]

The recall effort was started by Loan Eby, a resident of Papillion, Nebraska. Eby said that Fisher did not provide proper oversight over the fundraiser and did not ensure that it followed the district's fundraising policy for projects over $50,000. According to that policy, the high school fundraiser should have been approved by the board, but it was not. Eby also said that the board did not take corrective action when they found out that the policy had not been followed.[3]

Recall opponents

In reaction to the recall effort, Fisher said, “I, as a board member, feel that we handled things appropriately.” Fisher said that a separate complaint about the issue led to a request for state officials to look into the situation. “We’ll let the system work the way it’s supposed to, and we’ll let that investigation be cleared, before any conversation occurs regarding it,” Fisher said.[3]

“I’ve always been an advocate for taxpayers, being fiscally responsible when I’m making decisions,” Fisher said. “I hope that people will consider everything before they would put their signature on this type of petition.”[3]
