Valerie Jo Robison is a judge on the 21st District Court in Colorado. She was initially appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter (D) on June 14, 2007, and took office on August 6, 2007. Robison won retention to a full six-year term in 2010. She won retention again in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Biography

Robison graduated from the University of Colorado in 1986 and received her law degree from the University of Denver in 1991. She practiced with the law firm of Dyer & Dilts and with James R. Alvillar Esq. before working in the public sector for Mesa County in 1996. She worked as an interim executive director for the Mesa County Department of Human Services and an Assistant Mesa County Attorney. She was a chief assistant Mesa County attorney at the time of her judicial appointment in 2007.[1][2]

There are 164 judges on the Colorado District Courts, each appointed by the governor from a list of names compiled by a nominating commission. Initial terms last at least two years, after which judges must stand for retention in a yes-no election. Subsequent terms last six years.[3]

The court's chief judge is appointed by the chief justice of the supreme court to serve indefinitely.[3]

Qualifications
To serve on the district court, a judge must be:[3]

  • a qualified elector in the district;
  • licensed to practice law in state for five years; and
  • under the age of 72 (retirement by 72 is mandatory).
