Valerie Short was a Democratic candidate for Governor of Mississippi in the 2015 elections.[1] She filed her candidacy for governor with the Mississippi Democratic Party on February 25, 2015.[2] She was defeated in the Democratic primary by Robert Gray

Short is an Air Force veteran and an obstetrician gynecologist practicing in Jackson, Mississippi.[3]

Short is a Jackson-based M.D. with licenses to practice in both Mississippi and Tennessee. She graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School and completed her residency at Meharry Medical College before launching her career as an obstetrician gynecologist.[4][5][3] Short has written for Empower Magazine, has been involved with orchestrating events for Women For Progress and has spoken at medical conferences and events throughout the country.[6] Her work has been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance's Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition Program.[7]

Short served in the United States Air Force from 1982-1992. In addition to her M.D., she earned a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University.

Eleven state executive offices in Mississippi were up for election in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015, following a primary election on August 4, 2015. Runoffs were scheduled for August 25 in case no candidate received a majority (50 percent plus one) of the popular vote in a given primary race.
