Candidate Connection

Valerie Weber completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Weber's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Crime reduction. Public safety improvement in our Ward with more police presence in neighborhoods. This is a primary voter complaint - lack of police presence. 2. Proactive approach to governance. Instill sense of urgency, efficiency

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

1. Neighborhood excellence. Our Ward is home to some of the newest and oldest neighborhoods. Being hands-on, I seek to conduct a needs-assessments in neighborhoods to improve communication and outreach. 2. Neighborhood engagement. Public safety improves when constutuents know how to navigate government

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to those who learn from the past, assess the present and have the humility to walk into the future using their skills, knowledge and abilities to try to make it better for everyone.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

The Fifth Discipline - Peter Senge (MIT). This book discusses principles to foster a systems thinking approach. I plan to use this as the foundation of governance. There are five (5) factors: 1) Overcome mental models; the old ways don't work anymore; we must explore why and when we get stuck and move toward a more excellent way; reinvent every day to serve well; 2) personal mastery - this is a must in governance; it requries us to work in the present

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

The foremost characteristic in working with people is to listen to their concerns. Additionally, communication tools enhance interaction and push back fear. I plan to have an active calendar, to meet with and be present in our neighborhoods as much as needed to foster more sense of community.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

From my legislative days 10 years ago, the characteristics I worked on included emotional intelligence and development of a systems approach. In other words, governance should start from the heart and emerge into a world class art form. Walt Disney stated: Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends." People want to be heard; they want advocates and champions to create great communities. I also learned to work across the aisle and take the best ideas to formulate policy.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Understand the law, know when change is required and why; work in the tension between neighborhoods and development.

What legacy would you like to leave?

The legacy I would like to leave is one of service to the community of Las Vegas. I have spent 29 years of my life in this city. I love it

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was in high school. I worked at McDonalds. I learned how to balance study time and work for someone else.

What is your favorite book? Why?

My favorite book is The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. I review this almost every year. The Bible is also my daily dose of wisdom.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

n/a

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My library

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

Interpersonal skills, analytical skills and wisdom.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

Yes. This position was vacated mid-term and will require a quick ramp up to grasp the daily requirements needed to reach Ward goals.
