Van Hampton

Van Z. Hampton was a judge for the Sixteenth Judicial District in Kansas. He joined the court in 1995.[1] Hampton served as chief judge from January 2015 to December 2018. He succeeded Chief Judge Daniel L. Love.[2] Hampton retired December 31, 2018.[3]
Biography
Hampton earned his B.S. from Ft. Hays State University and his J.D. from Oral Roberts University. Hampton was admitted to the Kansas Bar in 1987 and the Colorado Bar in 1990. Before his work as judge, he was a lawyer in Dodge City, Kan.[4]

2016
Kansas held retention and partisan elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on August 2, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was June 1, 2016.[5] Incumbent Van Hampton ran unopposed in the Kansas Sixteenth Judicial District, Division 3 general election.[6]

Hampton was unopposed for re-election in the primary on August 7, 2012.[7] On November 6, 2012, he was re-elected to his seat after earning 100 percent of the vote with 12,532 votes. He ran in the election as a Republican.[1]

In 14 of the districts of the Kansas District Courts, judges are chosen in partisan elections.[8] These judges serve four-year terms and run for re-election at the end of their terms.[9]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[9]
- a state and district resident;
- a member in good standing of the state bar for at least five years; and
- under the age of 70. If a sitting judge turns 70 while on the bench, he or she may serve out the term.
