Vance W. Raye was the presiding justice of the Third District of the California Courts of Appeal. He was appointed to the court by former Governor George Deukmejian and took his oath of office on January 7, 1991. He was retained by voters in 2002. Raye was appointed presiding justice on November 23, 2010, by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.[1][2] Raye ran for retention in 2014, winning a new term that expires on January 3, 2027.[3][4]

Raye resigned on June 1, 2022.[5]

Military service

Raye served as a judge advocate general in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974. He was the chief of Military Justice.[6]

Education

Raye received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1967 and his J.D. in 1970 from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.[6]

Career

After Raye completed his military service, he joined the California Attorney General’s Office. He was a deputy attorney general from 1974 to 1980 and then a senior assistant attorney general until 1983. He advised Governor Deukmejian from 1983 to 1989 as the deputy legislative secretary and the legal affairs secretary. He was appointed to the Superior Court of Sacramento County in 1989, where he served until 1991.[6]
