Vance Salter
Vance E. Salter was a judge on the Florida Third District Court of Appeal. He served on the court from 2007 to 2020. He was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist on June 22, 2007, and sworn in on June 27, 2007.[1] He was retained by voters in 2008 and 2014.[2] Salter retired from the bench on August 31, 2020. Salter cited family reasons in his announcement that he was stepping down.[3]
Education
Salter received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1976.[4]
Career
Salter began his legal career with the law firm of Steel Hector & Davis. He became a partner in this firm in 1981. From 1987 to 2000, he was a commercial litigation partner with the firm Coll, Davidson, Carter, Smith, Salter & Barkett. Salter was an attorney with the international firm Hunton & Williams from 2000 until his appointment to the Third District Court of Appeal in 2007.[4]

Vance Salter did not file to run for re-election.
2014
Salter was retained to the Third District Court of Appeal with 72.7 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014. [5]
Bar evaluation
The Florida Bar conducted a poll of its members regarding the appellate judges up for retention in 2014. 90% of respondents recommended Salter for retention.[6]
Noteworthy cases
Court ruling says ban on gay adoptions unconstitutional (2010)
Florida's Third District Court of Appeal held that the law allowing gay men and women to be foster parents, but not legally adopt children, violated the Equal Protection Clause because it lacked a rational basis. Judge Salter called the foster couple behind the lawsuit, Martin Gill and his partner, heroic.
