Candidate Connection

Vanessa Edwards Foster participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on February 26, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Vanessa Edwards Foster's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Voting through infrastructure bill with district needs funded

2) Protecting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid
3) Closing the wage gap & wealth inequality gap[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Women's rights and equality for all citizens! Have been a part of #MeToo (2 different workplaces) and am fed up with no movement on addressing inequality in the workplace, politics and society!Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Vanessa Edwards Foster answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Ann Richards. She was down-home, no-nonsense and got things done (including record budget surpluses in TX) without a lot of fanfare or glamour. She's like my mom's own family bloodline: a tough Texas woman who isn't afraid to fight back![3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I began volunteer lobbying in 1997, both DC and later in Austin, even teaching primers to other citizen lobbyists on how to do it. It allowed me not only chance to learn how legislature works from the govt. side, but also to develop numerous relationships and contacts with folks in both Washington and Austin, some of which are still FB friends to this day! It'll allow me to hit the ground running once elected to office without much of a learning curve![3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Paper routes! I had three of them from my junior high years on through the first year and a half of college! It allowed me to buy my first vehicle (a pickup truck) when I was 15![3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Never Say Die by Black Sabbath! Ha![3]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
It's unique local nature as a representation to the entire body politic. Unlike senators, we have distinctive regional flavors and experiences (esp. in larger states like Texas) that allow us to show off our locales to the rest of the nation.[3]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Judiciary, Transportation, Ways & Means, Budget & Finance[3]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
It's impactful, but not a really uplifting story. In East Bernard TX, I walked up to a woman sitting on her front porch, smoking. As I handed her my flier, she said ""No! I don't vote! I'm not registered and I don't want to be!"" When I asked why, she stated ""Politics is a man's world. And what the hell are you doing running for office?"" When I responded to change things, she replied, ""nothing will change. It's always men who run, every time. They end up getting elected and screwing everything up for us! I don't even bother!"" For about 5 minutes I kept imploring her to get involved, and how I was trying by running a campaign, she said she noted how she had a 2 year old granddaughter and was trying to teach her the ""right ways,"" and she finally took my flier in with her when I told her to please set a good example for her grandchild. Sadly, though, she'd pretty much made it clear she'd given up hope for any change. I'd love to have the opportunity to go back, if elected, and speak to her again and show her we can make it if we try![3]
