Vanessa Gilmore was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. She joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Gilmore retired on January 2, 2022.[1]

Early life and education

Born in St. Albans, New York, Gilmore graduated from Hampton University with her bachelor's degree in 1977 and later from the University of Houston Law Center with her Juris Doctor degree in 1981.[2]

Professional career

Gilmore was a private practice attorney in the State of Texas from 1981 to 1994. Gilmore also served as a Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston College of Law in 1984.[2]

Judicial career

Southern District of Texas (1994-2022)

Gilmore was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas by President Bill Clinton on March 22, 1994 to a new judgeship created by 104 Stat. 5089 which was approved by Congress. Gilmore was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 8, 1994 on a Senate vote and received commission on June 9, 1994.[3] She retired on January 2, 2022.[2]
