The possibility of recalling members of the Vaughn Elementary School District Board of Trustees in Montana was discussed in March 2015. Community members gathered on March 11, 2015, to express their outrage at the board's 3-1 vote to place principal Dean Jardee on paid administrative leave for the remainder of the school year.[1] This effort was eventually abandoned.

Vaughn community members gathered to discuss their disagreement with the board's decision to place Jardee on paid administrative leave. Some accused the board of taking retributive action because Jardee had to discipline trustee Eric Buhler's son. Others said that the board disagreed with Jardee's personnel decisions. The board stated the move was "in the best interest" of the district.[1]

Before the vote was held, trustee and board chair Judd Brooks resigned following his discovery of the intent to remove Jardee. Trustee Cory Eli was the one dissenting vote from the remaining board members on the issue of Jardee's administrative leave; Tracy Lewis, Jennifer Links and Eric Buhler voted in favor of it.[1]

Brooks, Eli and Lewis's seats were up for election in the spring of 2015. As of the announcement of the recall effort, Brooks said he did not know if he would run for re-election.[1]

Montana Code Annotated lists legitimate reasons for which a recall election maybe held. Recalls are limited to lack of physical or mental fitness, incompetence, violation of oath of office, official misconduct or being convicted of a felony offense. As Cascade County Clerk and Recorder Rina Fontana Moore phrased it, recall elections cannot be held simply because constituents are "mad" at an elected official.[1]
