I am a wife, mom, and grandmother. My extensive experience as an educator, with more than 40 years as a high school science teacher, as well as my volunteer work in lead roles as an environmental activist, DFL officer, and community organizer, have all prepared me for this moment. My roots in this community are deep, and I feel a strong need to act, to speak up and do my part to create a better world for my children, grandchildren, and seven generations to come.

My dad was a WWII vet who grew up in farming in northern Minnesota but turned to factory work to feed his growing family. From Dad I inherited a very strong work ethic and his love of the land. Mom was a NY city gal, a Hunter college graduate, who taught us to be lifelong learners, and to always speak up when we saw an injustice. I chose teaching to share my love of science and the natural world with students, and put my heart and soul into it for many rewarding years.

Colleagues see me as a leader, an organizer, a problem solver, and a good listener who genuinely cares about people and sustainable solutions. I’ve served many leadership roles in environmental organizations and in the state DFL party. I am the chair emeritus of the DFL Environmental Caucus, and served as chair for 6 years after helping to create it. I’ve also helped organize a Church World Service CROP Hunger walk with South Metro churches, lobbied in Washington DC for Citizens’ Climate Lobby, and am a trained Climate Reality Leader.
  • I’m running for the Minnesota House because I believe good government that works for the people can improve the lives of ALL Minnesotans. I will work for solutions that are healthy and equitable for people, and protect the ecosystems we depend on, prioritizing legislation that helps us mitigate and adapt to our climate crisis. I will work for a Minnesota in which all have clean air, clean water, healthy food, a living wage, affordable comprehensive health care, and a safe, welcoming environment to live, work and play in.
  • Minnesotans deserve representatives who protect our rights and freedoms.

I will work for a Minnesota in which no one has to think about the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, or their religion before making a decision about where to walk, drive, live, work, or express a thought. I support a comprehensive single-payer health care plan, the right to make your own reproductive decisions, and to choose your own health care providers. Legislation I support will honor our treaties and protect the rights of Indigenous communities to hunt, fish, and gather from the land and water. I support adequate funding of police and other public safety resources, and holding all stakeholders accountable.

I support honest and fair elections.
  • Minnesotans value quality public education. I support fully funding our public schools. We must attract and hire a more diverse group of educators to ensure our schools meet students’ needs, while increasing teacher pay and benefits to keep experienced teachers in the classroom.

"Veda is the candidate and the person that you want in your corner, fighting for you and for what you believe in. She is passionate about her causes, listens to peoples’ opinions, and is a firm believer in doing what is right. Her dedication to helping students recognize the importance of being good stewards of the land can be seen in any of the students who have been in her classroom. Her decades of leadership in the classroom will readily transfer to leadership in the government. She will get it done!"

"Veda has a heart for equality and justice for all. She is a person with impeccable integrity, and she always has a warm smile ready for everyone she greets. Veda will make a great legislator!"
Pastor Jay Steele

"As a long-time high school science teacher, Veda Kanitz has dedicated her life to helping students and their families. She is committed to building a better future, where we protect the environment and help Minnesota thrive with a strong economy and safe communities.
She knows the struggles that many Minnesota families face in paying their bills -- and the huge burden of getting affordable health care. Veda will represent the interests of the people, not the special interests, and she will stand up to powerful lobbyists to do so.
Veda Kanitz will provide strong, thoughtful leadership. Her voice is much needed in the Minnesota House of Representatives."
Minnesota Senator John Marty

“It's my honor to endorse Veda Kanitz for Minnesota House District 57A, who I've come to know through our work together on environmental and clean water issues. Veda is one of the most committed, hard-working, and solution-oriented people I know, and she gets results. I know I can always depend on her to be an ally and champion in protecting Minnesota's waters, and to be thoughtful and collaborative. I am grateful to Veda for her steadfast leadership and delighted to endorse her candidacy for House District 57A.”

Senator Jen McEwen
Our greatest challenge is also our greatest opportunity. We are building a green economy, based on an energy system that is renewable, clean, and reliable. The challenge is to do it fast enough, and in a way that lifts up all communities, especially those that have been disproportionately impacted in the past. We are beyond the point where incremental change is sufficient. A green economy will strengthen the health of our communities, attracting and developing a wider, more diversified, and thus more reliable economic base.
I think experience is beneficial, and also that fresh, new ideas and perspectives are valuable. This is my first run for office as a legislator after serving in voluntary elected roles at all levels in my state DFL party and aiding many campaigns. My experience as a grassroots advocate for the environment, public education, and LGBTQ+ rights have also helped prepare me for my own campaign. My passion for preserving and protecting our environment and preserving a livable climate for my children, grandchildren and future generations has formed the basis of my involvement with several state and national environmental organizations. For over 4 decades I served as a high school science educator and environmental science club advisor. I organized in my community, became a trained Citizen Climate lobbyist, Climate Reality leader, and worked to establish, chair, and grow the DFL Environmental Caucus to a powerful statewide caucus. I was recognized in 2020 with the Willard Munger award for Distinguished Environmental Stewardship for my efforts. Now that I am retired from teaching, I am ready to build on all the alliances and lessons learned over the years as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives
Yes, relationships form the basis for trust and the ability to work together on issues. I already have strong relationships with several legislators due to my leadership in the DFL Environmental Caucus.
As a member of the Minnesota House I will continue to build relationships with others regardless of party.
That would have to be either our late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone who believed, “We all do better when we all do better,” or the late Willard Munger, “Mr Environment,” who served in the Minnesota House for over 40 years. He championed many key bills including: “Environmental and Natural ResourcesTrust Fund, the SolidWaste Reduction and Recycling Act of 1989, and the Wetlands Conservation Act of 1991.”
Many of my neighbors who are private well owners in New Market township and the nearby city of Elko New Market are very concerned about well interference, and the need to conserve and protect the quality and quantity of our drinking water supply and the headwaters of the Vermillion River. They question the city’s decision to allow construction of a water bottling plant which will use the city’s municipal well for the benefit of a private industry. Concerns have heightened after a water pump test showed well interference is likely as well as the potential for water quality issues.
I support the system currently in place in Minnesota.
I am especially interested in advocating for better protections for our groundwater resources. We have laws that prevent bulk transport of water away from our state but this has not prevented California-based Niagara, LLC from securing the right to bottle and sell water taken from the City of Elko New Market’s well in 2.4 billion single use plastic water bottles per year. I will introduce new groundwater laws, that require regional management, and state oversight of aquifers to assure that conservation measures are followed, surface waters are protected, and future demand does not exceed the aquifer’s capacity for recharge amid climate change and regional population growth.
