MONTPELIER Vermont Vermont State Speaker of the House Shap Smith (D) will face a challenger for his position. He has served as House speaker for the past four years.[1]
Representative Paul Poirier, a former Democrat who is now an Independent, confirmed that he will be challenging Smith for the position of speaker.[1]
Poirier said that he is running because he doesn't think that the voices of Republicans, Progressives, and Independents are being heard in debates.[1]
Members of the house will choose their new speaker on January 9, 2013, when the Legislature convenes.[1]
