Vermont held an election for secretary of state on November 8, 2022. The primary was scheduled for August 9, 2022. The filing deadline was May 26, 2022. This was one of 27 elections for secretary of state taking place in 2022. Click here for an overview of these races. All but three states have a secretary of state. Although the specific duties and powers of the office vary from state to state, secretaries of state are often responsible for the maintenance of voter rolls and for administering elections. Other common responsibilities include registering businesses, maintaining state records, and certifying official documents. At the time of the 2022 elections, there were 27 Republican secretaries of state and 20 Democratic secretaries of state.

A state government triplex refers to a situation where the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state are all members of the same political party. Heading into the 2022 elections, there were 23 Republican triplexes, 18 Democratic triplexes, and nine divided governments where neither party held triplex control.

Sarah Copeland Hanzas won election in the general election for Vermont Secretary of State.

Vermonters need to be empowered, enabled and inspired to participate in Democracy. If elected, I will bring back the Education and Outreach Coordinator position in the Secretary of State office. This person will help me convene a group of teacher advisors who will develop civics curriculum for Vermont teachers. When people don’t understand how government works, they are susceptible to misinformation about stolen elections. I will go on a Democracy Tour, tabling at farmer’s markets, and hosting Town Hall meetings to engage Vermonters in how to participate in Democracy.

The Secretary of State should put a voter guide in the hands of every registered voter in the state. Guides such as this can become commonplace. When you get your November ballot in the mail, you should also get a voter guide (online with a paper option). Voters should have the 45 days before the election to research the candidates, what they stand for and what they will do if elected. This will empower people to find the candidate whose values match their own.

During my tenure in the House, I have been a steadfast leader on climate action, reproductive liberty, sexual assault and harassment, paid sick days and paid family leave, racial justice and equity, sensible cannabis reform, and protections for Vermont’s first responders.
