Vermont Statewide Referendum: The Direct Primary (1916)
The Vermont Statewide Referendum: The Direct Primary, also known as Act 4 of 1916, was on the 1916 ballot in Vermont as a legislatively referred state statute. It was approved. The referendum approved the direct primary system that was legislatively instituted by Vermont's referendum on primary elections. The direct primaries began on March 20, 1916.
When an effort to repeal the direct primary system arose in 1923, the Vermont Legislature did not approve it.[1]
