Vermont bill would create crime classification system

MONTPELIER, Vermont: The Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced a bill that would form a group to create a classification system for crimes.[1]
Senator Richard Sears (D), chair of the Judiciary Committee, said that Vermont doesn't currently have a classification of minor misdemeanors, minor felonies, and major felonies, like most other states do. Instead, all crimes with a sentence of less than two years is a misdemeanor. A felony requires a longer prison sentence. He also said that most crimes have no minimum sentence or recommended average.[1]
Sears said that a system that treats an embezzlement of $5 million dollars equal to that of $10 is a problem.[1]
