Recall reports

An effort in Greenfield, Massachusetts, to recall Precinct 1 Councilor Verne Sund was initiated in January 2019.[1] Petitioners submitted 100 signatures from voters in Precinct 1 on February 15, 2019, meeting the requirement to advance to the next stage of the recall process. On February 28, 2019, City Attorney Gordon Quinn ruled that the signatures were not signed under the penalties of perjury, invalidating the petition.[2]

Petitioners began the recall process in January 2019. The recall effort was based on complaints about some of Sund's comments at public meetings, as well as complaints that he has not responded to official emails and phone calls.[3]

Massachusetts law says that petitioners must collect 100 signatures from within the targeted councilor's district. Once those are collected and verified, the first ten people who signed the petition have 21 days to collect signatures equal to 20 percent of the town's registered voters. In this case, petitioners would have needed to collect 2,346 signatures. [3]
