Vernon Cotten
Vernon Cotten was a judge for the Eighth Judicial District of Mississippi. The Eighth District serves Leake, Neshoba, Newton and Scott counties.[1]
Cotten was appointed to the bench by Governor Kirk Fordice in October 1997. He was elected to a full term in 1998, and was re-elected in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014.[2][3][4] Cotten retired from the court on May 31, 2017.[5]

Cotten defeated James E. Smith in his bid for re-election to the Eighth Judicial District, winning 84% of the vote.[6]

Education
Cotten received an undergraduate degree in forestry from Mississippi State University in 1959. He went on to earn a law degree from the Jackson School of Law (now known as the Mississippi College School of Law) in 1965. He was admitted to the Mississippi State Bar that same year.[2]

Prior to his judicial appointment in 1997, Cotten accrued 32 years of law experience. Past positions include the following:
- Prosecuting attorney, Leake County (18 years)
- Special judge, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (23 years)
- Judge, Carthage Municipal Court (10 years)
- City attorney, Town of Walnut Grove (23 years)
- Local counsel, Citizens Bank of Philadelphia (18 years)
- Attorney, Centra Electric Power Association (27 years)[2]
