Veterans given second chance in Thurston County
July 22, 2011
THURSTON COUNTY, Washington: The Thurston County District Court has become the first in the state to offer special programs to veterans.[1]
The program came after law enforcement and court officials noticed more crimes were being committed by those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.[1]
- "Those men and women we ask to defend us. If they're injured by their military service I think we owe them something," and it is not a "get out of jail free card." - Judge M. Brett Buckley[1]
The new program only applies to those suffering from a mental illness that was war related. If veterans commit sexual crimes or use a weapon they don't qualify.[1]
Seventeen veterans are currently in the Thurston County veteran's court program and there are seven more on a waiting list.[1]
