Recall reports

An effort in Peoria, Arizona, to recall Councilmember Vicki Hunt from her position was launched in February 2016. A statement of organization for a group called Recall Vicki Hunt was filed with the Peoria City Clerk on February 11, 2016.[1] Organizers submitted 54 petitions with 798 signatures to the city clerk in June 2016.[2] On July 7, 2016, Superior Court Judge Lori Horn Bustamante invalidated petitions because they did not note whether the petition gatherers were volunteers or paid contractors.[3] A second recall petition was submitted to the Peoria City Clerk in July 2016 but no signatures were filed by an August 2016 deadline.[4][5]

Recall supporters

Andres Padilla Sr. created Recall Vicki Hunt to force a recall election. Hunt told the Peoria Times that Padilla accused her of raising taxes.[1]

In July 2016, Hunt told the Peoria Times that a second recall effort was initiated by Jose Rivero, the father of former Peoria City Councilman Tony Rivero.[4]

Response by Vicki Hunt

Hunt issued the following response to the first recall petition in an interview with the Peoria Times:

The recall attempt has come as a surprise. However, anyone has the right to mount a recall. My office has tried repeatedly to get ahold of Mr. Padilla to sit down and have a conversation as to what is troubling him. But he has not returned phone calls. [6]

—Vicki Hunt (2016), [1]

Hunt responded to the second recall petition in an email to the Peoria Times:

I am, as you might suppose, very frustrated by their continued attempts to ‘steal’ this seat, for which I was elected in 2014, for four years. These continued recall attempts take my focus off of doing my job and put me in a constant election cycle. [6]

—Vicki Hunt (2016), [4]

Recall organizers need to submit at least 478 signatures from residents of Hunt's Acacia district to force an election. Recall Vicki Hunt supporters submitted 798 signatures for verification in June 2016, but these signatures were invalidated.[1][2]
