I am a retired educator with over 30 years in the field, most of them as an elementary special education teacher in the Aurora (CO) Public Schools. I have lived in this community for 30 years and raised my family here. Upon retirement, I took some time to step back, take time for myself and enjoy some calm and quiet. While I enjoyed this time, I did become restless and also began to sub in my district. The following year, 2019, I decided to continue my work in public education by running for a seat on the Board of Education in Aurora. I was elected and am now completing my first four-year term. I chose to run again as I believe my knowledge of and experience in the Aurora Public Schools will continue to be a strength for our board and also of value as we have had a change in our district leadership.
  • We have to recruit and retain talented teachers and support staff to provide our students the best education possible.
  • Building strong community partnerships increases the menu of choice from which our students can select programming.
  • Committing to and demonstrating educational excellence will attract families to our district which in turn helps us grow and showcase our strong commitment to our communities.
I am most passionate about public education, providing equitable resources and opportunities to our very diverse communities, environmental concerns and mental health. Appropriate funding is central to providing all of these services and protecting the environment we live in.
I look up to so many of the teachers I had as I came through my school age years. They taught me , encouraged me , accepted me, and respected my desire to learn.
Integrity - doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Being honest, fiscally responsible, and professional are necessary characteristics for any elected official to demonstrate. One must be committed and dedicated to the work of the office he/she is elected to.
I would like to leave the legacy of holding consistent values and beliefs, not wavering to earn someone's favor or for monetary gain, and being forthright and honest; to bee seen as one who cared deeply for the well-being of the whole.
I remember the asassination of Martin Luther King, Jr, and the Viet Nam war which my brother fought in. I also remember not understanding the why of any of this. I would have been between 7-8 years old.
Little King Sandwich Shop , Omaha,NE (I don't remember how long I was there!)I reeme
Anything by Nora Roberts writing as J D Robb because her novels are centered around a very strong female character!
The primary role of a school board member in our district is to set results and limitations that the superintendent must work within and to evaluate the superintendent on these.
My constituents are the students, families, community members and staff of the Aurora Public Schools.
We are developing Affinity Groups for our staff of color, are actively recruiting staff of color so that we become more representative of our student population, translating written communication and verbal communication into at least our district's top 10 languages, and focusing on DEI district wide.
I would like to expand Career/Tech Ed and STEM programs, We're preparing our students for jobs that don't yet exist and must be as up-to-date as possible in providing education in ever-changing technology, trade skills, communication skillls, and academics. Apprenticeships and marketing of the training and job availability in the trades is crucial for our learners who may need to explore different post-secondary options to believe they can achieve a successful future.
