Upon announcing that he would challenge incumbent City Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus for the Ward 1 seat, Salcido criticized her, saying, "I think she’s kind of isolated herself on the Council to a large extent," and, "That kind of makes her ineffective. I think she hasn’t found a way to build a consensus or momentum."[3]
Salcido also told the Reno Gazette-Journal that his personal politics often did not align with the city council, which the paper described as "mostly Democratic" at the time. Calling himself a "a business Republican," Salcido also stressed the nonpartisan nature of the city council by saying, "Unlike in Carson City or Washington, D.C., (local) issues require some kind of common sense leadership... This Council as a whole does care quite a bit about entrepreneurship and development a business-friendly environment and I would fit right in there."[3]
