I am a passionate community leader deeply rooted in District 3. I was born and raised on the city’s East Side; currently living in the Martin Luther King Jr. Park Neighborhood.

Through my non-profit involvement, I have become known for championing civil rights, civic engagement, and social progress. While engaging in that work, I always ensure there is always a seat at the table for our young people.

After a decade in corporate America, I found my calling in community and smaller organizations. Currently, I help to address Iowa’s workforce transportation challenges through a career in public transportation.

I am also the mother of a DMPS student and understand the decisions the school board makes today will shape the opportunities and future of not just my son but all the community’s children.

  • Equitable Education: Our students deserve learning environments they can thrive in; environments that transcend racial or socio-economic differences, environments that are culturally responsive and cultivated by teachers, staff, and administration that are representative of the communities they serve. Our students deserve an equitable opportunity to enjoy the freedom to learn.
  • Community-Aligned Engagement: We must ensure the outcomes our students are able to achieve reflect the diverse values and aspirations that our community has for them. We need to prioritize conversations with students, parents, teachers, staff and the community to collaborate on resources and policies that support our student's educational needs.
  • Student Outcomes Focus: The opportunities provided by the district must support closing the achievement gap for all students regardless of their zip code. We must equip our students with the education and skillsets needed to ensure excellence in both academic and career pursuits. This will help to ensure our students have the opportunity to pursue trade school, apprenticeships, college, or their other diverse aspirations.
Equitable Education: equitable allocation of resources to schools in underserved communities, implementing diverse and include curricula, and reducing the achievement gap through target interventions and support.

Community-Aligned Engagement: creating policies that prioritize community input in decision-making processes, establishing channels for regular communication between the school system and the community, and ensuring educational policies align with the values of the community.

Student Outcomes: data-driven decision-making to track and improve outcomes, expanding education opportunities beyond traditional college paths, and implementing programs that provide support and resources to students in underserved areas.

Diversity and Inclusion: promoting diversity among teachers and staff, addressing issues of bias and discrimination in education, creating safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Early childhood education: ensuring that all children have access to high-quality pre-K programs that prepare them for success in school and life.
The role of a school board member is to be a representative, advocate, and steward of the community’s educational interests. The goal of a school board member should be to represent the best interest of the students and the community they serve. To do that, school board members must set a representative vision and policies to guide the district, allocate resources, and ensure the district operates effectively and in accordance with the law.
I have been endorsed by the Des Moines Education Association (a union representing over 3,500 hard-working teachers, educational support professionals, nurses, certified support staff, and sign language interpreters in the Des Moines Public Schools) and a host of community leaders, retired teachers, principals, and parents.
