Two seats on the Victoria Independent School District board were scheduled to be up for general election on May 10, 2014. The district canceled the election since both incumbents, Board President Tami Keeling and member L.J. 'Lou' Svetlik, were running unopposed.[1]

Victoria Independent School District is located in Victoria County, Texas. The county seat of Victoria County is Victoria. The county's population was 86,793 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Victoria County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment and median income. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 16.7 percent of Victoria County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. Victoria County had a median income of $50,097 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for Victoria County was 16.8 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Victoria Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected by geographic district. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election was scheduled to take place on May 10, 2014. The district canceled this election since both seats were uncontested.[1]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[3]
