Four seats on the Vigo County School Corporation Board of School Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Tammy S. Pearson defeated challenger Christopher L. Switzer for the District 2 seat, but District 4 incumbent Tomas W. Thomas lost to newcomer David A. Lotter. Rosemarie Scott lost to board member Alpa Patel for her District 5 seat in a rematch of their 2006 and 2010 races. Patrick J. Sheehan ran unopposed and won re-election to his District 1 seat.[1]
On September 11, 2014, incumbent Tomas W. Thomas announced that he would no longer campaign for the District 4 seat, conceding the race to his challenger. This decision came after the withdrawal deadline, however, and therefore Thomas still appeared on the ballot.[2]

Vigo County School Corporation is located in Vigo County, Indiana. The county seat is Terre Haute. Vigo County is home to 108,291 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Vigo County School Corporation was the eighth-largest school district in Indiana and served 15,601 students.[4]
Demographics
Vigo County underperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 21.4 percent of Vigo County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Vigo County was $40,547 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Vigo County was 19.0 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The Vigo County Board of School Trustees consists of seven members elected by specific geographic district to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]
