Vince Beltrami was a 2016 Independent candidate for District N of the Alaska State Senate.

Beltrami is the president of the Alaska AFL-CIO, which is a labor union under the direction of the national AFL-CIO.

Career

Beltrami earned an A.A. from Glendale Community College in 1983. After that, he finished his general studies at the University of San Diego in 1984 before completing a B.A. in journalism and communications at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.[1]

From 1998 to 2003, Beltrami worked as a business agent for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1547.[1][2]

In 2003, Beltrami became the executive director of the NECA-IBEW Apprenticeship Program, which trains workers in the electrical and telecommunications industries.[1][3]

Executive president of Alaska AFL-CIO

Beltrami was elected executive president of Alaska AFL-CIO in 2006 and re-elected to a second four-year term in August 2010. The Alaska AFL-CIO is the largest labor organization in the state of Alaska and "is responsible for legislative advocacy, public relations and communications" on behalf of organized labor policy goals.[2][1]

He also serves as chairman of the Putting Alaska First Committee, a Super PAC formed in 2010.[4]

In January 2016, the Alaska Dispatch News reported that Beltrami was a co-chair of "Alaska's Future," a campaign that aims to convince state legislators to use "the Permanent Fund to address the state’s budget crisis."[5]

Campaign themes

2016

Beltrami's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Standing Up For A Sustainable State Budget

  • We must be open to discussing any and all options for new revenues, just as we must be open to sensible cuts.
  • Advocate zero-based budgeting, asking all state departments to justify current and future spending.
  • Ensure Alaska gets fair compensation for our natural resources.
  • The Arctic is our biggest economic opportunity. There are endless manufacturing and resource development possibilities. Let’s lead the way.

Standing Up for Alaskans

  • Support responsible development in ANWR and in the outer continental shelf.
  • Negotiated contracts that put people to work in the oil industry, from the North Slope to Valdez.
  • Spearheaded the ballot proposition which significantly raised Alaska’s minimum wage for the first time in seven years.
  • Stand up for future Alaskans by strengthening our schools and implementing forward funding of education

Standing Up for Jobs

  • From advocating for vocational education to training our youngest for the jobs of the future, to steering the state to fund new jobs in alternative and renewable energy projects, one thing has been clear to me: Alaska is a land of opportunity for those willing to work hard.[6]
