Vince Girdhari Chhabria is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Prior to joining the court, Chhabria was a Deputy City Attorney at the San Francisco City Attorney's Office. In July of 2013, President Obama nominated Chhabria for a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.[1] Chhabria was confirmed by the Senate on March 5, 2014 on a vote of 58-41.[2] Chhabria is the first Indian American to pass through the confirmation process and become an Article III judge on a federal court in the state of California.[3]
Early life and education
Chhabria earned his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, graduating in 1991. He went on to earn his J.D., graduating in 1998 from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.[4]

On July 25, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Vince Girdhari Chhabria to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California to fill the vacancy left by Susan Illston.[1] President Obama commented on the nomination, stating:
“ | These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench. They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.[4] | ” |
Chhabria was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association.
Chhabria's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and he was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[6]
Chhabria's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 2014 after a 13-5 vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[7] On March 5, 2014, the United States Senate confirmed Chhabria on a vote of 58-41.[2]
Senator Barbara Boxer commented on Chhabria's confirmations:
