Candidate Connection

Vince Lutterbie participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 22, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Vince Lutterbie's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Annual dental checkups for Veterans
Work with my towns on infrastructure improvements
Support local agribusinesses[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Health care: worked with Dept of Mental Health for 26 yearsCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Vince Lutterbie answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

FDR He got the economy going due to several issues, but he managed to get jobs started with a ton of public works programs.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
I would use 'Animal Farm' and '1984' as examples of what I am against.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, independence from PACs and willingness to listen to all sides of an issue. I also would like to have more issues that pertain to all state residents on a ballot, rather than being passed by legislature. The recent overturn of Missouri's right to work bill is a good example of why I believe in this.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I listen. I remember who put me here. I think I have empathy for other people and I have proven that in my choices of jobs. I am a retired dentist who worked for the state, and later worked to help the needs of people in rest homes. I never made the money that I could have made, but I did make a difference.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To get the feedback from constituents and do the best you can for the majority of them.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to improve the infrastructure of all of my towns with the potential for better economic growth.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The Cuban missile crises, I was 9.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked as a summer groundskeeper for the sub-development where I lived. I was 14 and kept it through the summer.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
My car broke down and my date had changed her clothes to a mini skirt, but we had to call her dad to get us.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving, due to lack of Madison Avenue interference as well as the chance to be with family.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
To Kill A Mockinbird. I grew up during the 50s and 60s and this book resonates with me.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Gandalf[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My pets, they are always loving and forgiving.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Hotel California[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Relationship with my father.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
I feel that the Republicans have so much control that they have forgotten to listen to their constituents. The Democrats have no power and they act like it.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Probably, but it is OK either way.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Roads, bridges and buildings. Our state has not had a good maintenance program for years now.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
One where there is no need for vetoes or overrides because the Governor takes an interest and provides feedback on bills before they are passed.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Of course. It improves working relationships, trust and allows for hoenst mistakes to be made without a situation progressing beyond repair.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A neutral body with the basic district being county based except for major cities, then working with demographis for a good balance in those cases.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Mental Health Dental Board Agriculture[3]
If you are a current legislator, what appealed to you about your current committees?
N/A[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Probably not[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Jerry Litton[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
No[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I hear this a lot. People want to work with people, not answering machines. The best example is an older person trying to work with the Social Services in our state. It is difficult to navigate our system.[3]
