Efforts to recall City Councilmen Danny Begley and Vinny Palermo did not go to a vote in Omaha, Nebraska. Signatures were not submitted by the July 17, 2023, deadline for Palermo or the August 30, 2023, deadline for Begley.[1][2][3][4]

Recall supporters

Omaha resident Jonathan Rentería submitted a recall petition filing form to the Douglas County Election Commission on April 25, 2023. He submitted a revised form on April 27, 2023. The text of the revised form reads, "We, the voters of District 4, demand the immediate recall of Councilman Vinny Palermo for failing to uphold the trust of his constituents by violating his probation, abusing his power for personal gain, and being charged with nine felony counts."[5]

An Omaha resident filed for petitions to recall Begley on June 6, 2023. The resident alleged that Begley has neglected his duties and been politically dishonest.[2]

Recall opponents

Palermo had until May 19, 2023, to respond to the recall petition. He did not provide a statement of defense by that date.[6][7]

Organizers would have needed to collect signatures equal to 35% of votes cast for the seat of the officeholder named in the recall petition during the preceding general election in order to trigger a recall election. Organizers had 30 days in which to collect signatures.[5][7]

According to Omaha's city charter, a council member may be removed from office after missing three consecutive months of regular council meetings without being excused. On April 28, 2023, a judge ruled that Palermo would be held in the Saunders County Jail until his trial. As of July 25, 2023, Palermo had missed three consecutive months of council meetings. The city council voted to remove Palermo from his office due to unexcused absences on August 1, 2023.[3][8][9][10][11]
