Virgil Smith was a judge of the Michigan 3rd Circuit Court. He assumed office in 2004. He left office on December 31, 2018.

Smith ran for election to the Detroit City Council to represent District 4 in Michigan. He lost in the primary on August 3, 2021.

Smith was first appointed to the 3rd Circuit Court by Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) on May 19, 2004, replacing retired Judge Kaye Tertzag. He served as chief judge from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2013.[1][2][3] Smith retired on December 31, 2018.[4]

Education

Smith received his B.A. degree from Michigan State University and his J.D. degree from Wayne State Law School.[5]

Career

Early in his career, Smith served as a Michigan legislator. For 11 years, he served in the House of Representatives. In 1980 and 1981, he was the chair of the judiciary subcommittee on court reorganization. He was elected to the Senate in 1988, where he served as the Senate Democratic floor leader from 1995 until 2001. In 2002, he was appointed to the Wayne County prosecutor's office. He was the division chief of legislation and community outreach for that office prior to his judicial appointment in 2004.[1]

Withdrawn or disqualified candidates

2012

Smith was one of 17 candidates competing for 16 seats on the 3rd Circuit Court. Only one candidate was a non-incumbent. Smith was re-elected with 5.28 percent of the vote.[6][7]

The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association rated candidates running for judicial office in 2012. Candidates were given one of five ratings: Outstanding, Well Qualified, Qualified, Not Qualified or No Rating.
