The Virginia-North Carolina Boundary Agreement of 1970 is an interstate compact between Virginia and North Carolina. The compact affirmed the exact geographic location of the boundary between the two states, with special regard for an area eastward from the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean.[1]
Text of the compact
The legislature of each member state passes the laws with certain modifications, but the core of the legislation remains the same.
§ 1-305. Boundary with North Carolina eastward from low-water mark of Atlantic Ocean The boundary line between the Commonwealth and North Carolina eastward from the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean shall be and remains the line beginning at the intersection with the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean and the existing North Carolina-Virginia boundary line; thence due east to the seaward jurisdictional limit of Virginia; such boundary line to be extended on the true 90 degree bearing as far as a need for further delimitation may arise. 1970, c. 343, § 7.1-4.1; 2005, c. 839. Virginia-North Carolina Boundary Agreement of 1970 ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, 1970 CHAPTER 343 An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding thereto a new section number 7.1-4.1 to establish and describe the boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina eastward from the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean. Approved April 1, 1970 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: 1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding thereto a new section number 7.1-4.1 as follows: § 7.1-4.1. The boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina eastward from the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean shall be and hereby is a line beginning at the intersection with the low-water mark of the Atlantic Ocean and the existing North Carolina-Virginia boundary line; thence due east to the seaward jurisdictional limit of Virginia; such boundary line to be extended on the true ninety degree bearing as far as a need for further delimitation may arise. This act shall become effective upon the ratification and approval thereof, and concurrence therein, by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina and upon the approval of and consent to this section by the Congress of the United States. |
