Virginia Carlton is a judge for Position 1 of the Mississippi Court of Appeals District 4. She assumed office on January 2, 2007. Her current term ends on January 5, 2031.

Carlton ran for re-election for the Position 1 judge of the Mississippi Court of Appeals District 4. She won in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Education

Carlton received her B.B.A. from the University of Mississippi in 1986 and her J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1989.[1]

Career

After law school, Carlton was a law clerk for Justice Joel Blass of the Mississippi Supreme Court. She joined the U.S. Army JAG Corps in 1990. As a JAG officer, Carlton served the Army as a prosecutor, defense counsel, deputy staff judge advocate, staff judge advocate and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Army in Hawaii. She later served as a military trial judge in the U.S. Army Reserve and as an associate appellate judge on the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals. When Carlton left active duty in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, she became a Marion County public defender. She later served as an assistant district attorney in the 15th Circuit District and as an instructor and staff attorney for the Southwest Mississippi Children's Advocacy Center. She represented District 100 in the Mississippi House of Representatives from January 2004 until her appointment to the Court of Appeals in 2006. Carlton retired from the military in February 2015 after more than 24 years of service.[2][1]

Military leave

Carlton was on unpaid leave from the Court of Appeals from March 1 to May 31, 2010, serving as a U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals judge in Alexandria, Virginia.[3] She said in a statement, "I'm honored to do my duty and to serve my country."[4]
