The Virginia State Comptroller is an appointed state executive position in the Virginia state government, responsible for oversight of the state's finances.
Current officeholder
The current Virginia State Comptroller is Scott Adams (nonpartisan). Adams assumed office in 2024.
Authority
The comptroller's powers are derived from § 2.2-800A of the Code of Virginia.[1]
§ 2.2-800A:
| There is created a Department of Accounts (the "Department"). The Director of the Department shall be known as the Comptroller. He shall be appointed by the Governor to serve at his pleasure. |
Qualifications
As of January 2021, there were no specific qualifications to serve as state comptroller.[2]

The comptroller is appointed by the governor and serves at the governor's pleasure.[3]
Duties
The comptroller's duties are laid out in Chapter 8 of Title 2.2 of the Code of Virginia and include oversight of the state's accounting systems and transactions involving public funds, collection of monthly financial reports from state agency heads, and the publication of an annual financial report.[4]
