RICHMOND, Virginia: One month after Tracy Thorne-Begland's nomination was blocked by the Virginia House of Delegates, the Richmond Circuit Court appointed him to a General District Court judgeship.[1] Chief Judge Richard D. Taylor, Jr. signed an order naming Thorne-Begland to the post effective on July 1. Thorne-Begland is openly gay and is believed to be the first openly gay judge in Virginia's history. In a statement, state Senator Donald McEachin commended the court for "putting aside bigotry, prejudice and false excuses." Republican legislative leaders accused the court of "substituting their judgment for that of the General Assembly and superseding the General Assembly's vested constitutional authority to choose judges."[2]
