W. Clayton Burch was the West Virginia Superintendent of Schools. Burch assumed office on February 21, 2020. Burch left office on August 10, 2022.

Burch was appointed superintendent on February 21, 2020, by the West Virginia Board of Education.[1] He was then selected to fill the role permanently on June 10, 2020.[2] Burch replaced Steven L. Paine who announced his retirement from the position on February 5, 2020.[3]

Burch requested a switch in office: from state superintendent to superintendent of the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. The request was approved and effective August 10, 2022.[4]

Burch is a former interim West Virginia secretary of commerce. He was appointed to the position by Governor Jim Justice (R) on June 15, 2018, effective immediately, following the resignation of former Commerce Secretary H. Woody Thrasher.[5] He served until January 2019.

Biography

Burch previously served as the interim secretary of education and the arts and as associate state superintendent of schools in West Virginia.[5]

Burch was appointed to serve as the interim West Virginia secretary of commerce by Gov. Jim Justice (R) on June 15, 2018, effective immediately.[5]

In a press release announcing the appointment, Justice stated that Burch's appointment was expected to be brief and the governor would begin considering applications immediately.[5]
