Willie James "W. J." Maye Jr. was the District 6 representative on the Birmingham City Schools school board in Alabama. From 2002 to 2013. While on the board, he served as School Board President.

Mayes was elected to his first term on the Birmingham City School Board in 2002.

2013 Birmingham City Council vacancy

Maye applied to fill the District 6 vacancy on Birmingham City Council caused by the resignation of now-Judge Carole C. Smitherman. He was one of eight finalists for the seat, which was vacant from January to August after the Council deadlocked on two candidates.[4][5] Maye was not on the ballot for the city elections in August 2013, when Sheila Tyson won the seat.[6]

Confrontations with board member

On June 8, 2010, Maye, then Board President, was criticized by fellow board member Tyrone H. Belcher, Sr. for ending a meeting without allowing questions or public comment.[7] During a closed board meeting on January 25, 2011, Maye was involved in an altercation with Belcher. According to the incident report filed by Maye, Maye intervened in an argument between Belcher and Board President Phyllis Wyne to prevent it from escalating into a physical altercation.[8]
