Keyser, W.Va. The West Virginia Supreme Court began their Truancy, Dropouts, and Drugs Program this month with a seminar at Mineral County Courthouse. The initiative, lead by Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis will travel the state presenting methods for preventing truancy. The Court justified the initiative citing research on the impact of truancy on later life done by 19th Circuit Judge Alan D. Moats. Davis cited important statistics for the crowd including, "Eight out of ten persons in West Virginia jails and prisons were dropouts." Ultimately, the judges target parents as the main cause of the problem. Davis told the crowd, "Get your children to school. Because if you don't, then we will see in one fashion or another that the children are in school. The circuit judges have the ability to file educational neglect petitions against parents who do not see that their children are in school. And our circuit judges are beginning to do that."[1]
