Three seats on the Waco Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. In the at-large race, Cary DuPuy defeated challenger Armando Arvizu. In District 2, Colbert Murphy defeated challenger Jezelle D. Cooper for an unexpired term. District 3 incumbent Larry Perez retained his seat as it was unopposed.[1]

Waco Independent School District is located in McLennan County, Texas. The county seat of McLennan County is Waco. The county's population was 234,906 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]
Demographics
McLennan County underperforms in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 21.8 percent of McLennan County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.3 percent rate for the state of Texas. McLennan County had a median income of $41,589 in 2010 compared to $51,563 for Texas. The poverty rate for McLennan County was 21.8 percent in 2010 compared to a 17.4 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Waco Board of Trustees consists of seven members, five of whom are elected by district and two at-large. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for three seats, including one unexpired term. Two seats were on the ballot in May 2015.[3]
A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[4]
