I was born, right down the road in Culver City,.CA. I have lived and studied, and performed all over the country in theaters and amusement parks, and nightclubs, places of worship… And worked a lot of odd jobs! I have volunteered as an election clerk, Poll inspector, And firefighter… I returned to Southern California in 1988 and studied improv at the second city training center, at the old Mayfair Theatre. I performed in clubs, TV and movies All around Santa Monica, many right on the Third Street promenade. For the last nine years, I have been playing my guitar on the our PUBLIC Promenade. I have seen the way. The city has treated its homeless human being residents, and I have changed from being a performer, to an advocate for the homeless.
This summer, the ultra conservative Supreme Court handed down a ruling in grants Pass versus Johnson that gave cities the right to criminalize homelessness! In her dissent of that ruling, Justice Soto mayor said to keep people from sleeping as cruel and unusual punishment and goes against the eighth amendment of our Constitution! Soon after that ruling Phil Brock, Oscar de la Torre voted to criminalize, sleeping bags and bed rolls for homeless human beings! That’s inhumane! Let’s work towards solutions and Housing make a better life for all Santa Monicans! Peacelove, Wade- Human rights is my message! The US Constitution is a History of working Towards human rights! There have been setbacks, but we keep moving forward. “We are not going back! “ If we stand up for the rights of Any human we stand up for the rights of all. We need to keep integrating, working towards equal rights, equal justice, equal opportunity! “The test of our progress is not whether we add to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. “ Santa Monica, we don’t have to continue to segregate, by pushing out poor people. We can show that our government is for all of our people and lead other communities to do the same. Let’s keep working towards a better day for everyone!
- Santa Monica needs to start building more affordable housing! we have had no problem building market rate housing, but the business owners and government of Santa Monica have been pushing against building affordable housing. So much so, that the state of California took away its zoning rights for a couple of months and 2022! Since Santa Monica became compliant with the California department of housing and community development through its reworked housing elements plan… Santa Monica has fallen far behind in the goals set for affordable housing. While, more rich people housing Is being built all the time! This is the fault of bad leadership, not helping to move the community forward. Lack of affordable housing makes for a bad democracy!
- Santa Monica needs to continue to integrate and work toward a more vibrant, democracy! We are one of the most expensive cities. We have to help show that progressive government can help the poor and working poor survive, and not let our local democracy, be controlled by only rich and the property owners… Especially, next Our PUBLIC BEACHES! Our leaders need to propose some affordable housing be built on some small percentage of the 200 acres that will open up from the Santa Monica airport in 2028! To have that much land open up and only be used for a great park, during a housing crisis, is irresponsible and cruel. How many homeless will be sleeping in that great park, if we do nothing about this housing crisis, this homelessness crisis?
It is time for a second Bill of Rights, where every American has the right to a decent place to live! Every American has the right to a job that pays a living wage! Every American has the right to healthcare! And, every American has the right to a good education! I paraphrased. And, there were other points. But, these were some of the goals, And we still haven’t achieved those goals today… 80 years later! We have to keep moving forward! We don’t need to limit peoples dreams, but we should limit the level of poverty that keeps Human beings sleeping in the streets!
