Cress is a retired teacher and now works as an attorney.[2]

Three at-large seats on the Calexico Unified School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The race featured only one incumbent, Erik Ortega, and four challengers, Benjamin Joseph Horton, Walter Cress, Lorenzo Calderon and German Duran.
Ortega won his bid for re-election, and newcomers Calderon and Cress won election to the board.

Funding
The Imperial County Registrar of Voters does not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia submitted a request for this district's reports on October 24, 2014, and the reports will be added to this page once the county government has fulfilled the request.
Endorsements
Cress received endorsements from Associated Calexico Teachers and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council.[3][4]
