Nestler was a Green Party candidate for District 76 of the New York State Assembly. The primary election was on September 14, 2010, and the general election was on November 2.

Nestler ran in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 87. He ran unopposed in the Green primary on September 13, 2012. He was defeated by Luis R. Sepulveda in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2][3]
