Born and raised in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, I’m the proud son of two Mexican immigrants: a construction worker and an SEIU 2015 in-home care provider.

I am the product of local public schools. When I first began attending Telfair Elementary School in Pacoima, I only spoke Spanish. Thanks to the grace and patience of my teachers, I quickly picked up English. At San Fernando Middle School, I learned to play three instruments — guitar, vihuela, and alto saxophone — and was part of the school’s mariachi band and advanced orchestra. I then graduated from San Fernando High School, where I was the valedictorian.

I have dedicated my life to public service, and will continue to do just that.
  • I’m the only candidate with government experience at the local, state, and national levels. I have worked for: President Barack Obama (White House intern); California Attorney General Rob Bonta (Spokesperson); California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (Press Secretary); U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (Law Clerk);U.S. Congressman Tony Cardenas (Fellow); LA City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez (Communications Director); Democratic National Committee (Western Region Communications Director); State Senator Alex Padilla (Intern).
  • I’m proud of my working class roots. As the son of immigrants, I’ve seen my parents struggle to make ends meet and to pay their bills on time. However, through it all, they never lost hope, instead reminding me of one thing over and over again: échale ganas y ayuda a otros — don't give up and help others. That powerful lesson is what fueled me to become the first in my family to graduate from high school (San Fernando High School), college (Brown University), and law school (Northwestern Pritzker School of Law).
  • I am running to fight for working families like mine – not big corporations. My campaign is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people.
I am passionate about tackling homelessness, protecting our environment, increasing public safety, and making healthcare more affordable.
I look up to my parents. They are my heroes because they left everything behind in Mexico – their families, their friends, and their homes – in search of the American Dream. I can’t possibly imagine what it must have felt like when they first arrived. Among other things, they didn’t know the language and only had a few friends here. Yet, they persevered and did everything in their power to provide for my sister and me. I am forever indebted to them.
Among the greatest challenges California will face are homelessness and climate change.

If elected, I would author legislation that further finances and streamlines the construction of affordable housing (especially permanent supportive housing), that prioritizes the delivery of mental health services to our unhoused neighbors, and that better tracks the money being spent on homelessness.

I would also protect our environment by holding big polluters accountable, protecting people from extreme heat, and ensuring that our transition to a clean energy economy benefits all Californians.
