Walter Herbert Rice is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rice graduated from Northwestern University with his bachelor's degree in 1958. Rice earned both his J.D. from the Columbia University School of Law and his M.B.A. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business Administration in 1962. Rice also has two honorary degrees: a doctor of laws from the University of Dayton and a doctor of humane letters from Wright State University.[1][2]

Judicial career

Southern District of Ohio

Rice was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on April 14, 1980, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio vacated by Timothy Hogan. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 21, 1980, and he received his commission on May 23, 1980. He served as chief judge of the court from 1996 to 2003. Rice elected to take senior status beginning on November 30, 2004. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Michael Barrett.[2]
