Walter King Stapleton is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Cuthbert, Georgia, Stapleton earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1956, his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1959, and his LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1984.[1]

Stapleton was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on March 27, 1985, to a new seat created by 98 Stat. 333. Hearings on Stapleton's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on April 3, 1985, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) the same day. Stapleton was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on April 3, 1985, and he received his commission the next day. He assumed senior status on June 2, 1999.[1][2] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Thomas Ambro.

District of Delaware

Stapleton was nominated by President Richard Nixon on September 22, 1970, to a seat vacated by Judge Edwin Steel, Jr. Stapleton was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 8, 1970, and he received his commission on October 14, 1970. Stapleton served as the chief judge for the District of Delaware from 1983 to 1985. He resigned from the district court on May 8, 1985, upon his elevation to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.[1]
