Three seats on the Warwick Public Schools school committee were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

In District 1, incumbent Eugene A. Nadeau ran against Dean Johnson. Newcomer Stephen M. Pope challenged incumbent Marty T. Medeiros for the District 2 seat. Incumbent Bethany A. Furtado was unopposed for the District 3 seat. Nadeau, Medeiros and Furtado won election in their respective districts.

Warwick Public Schools is located in Kent County, Rhode Island. The county seat of Kent County is East Greenwich. Kent County is home to 165,035 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Warwick County Schools was the third-largest school district in Rhode Island and served 9,977 students.[2]

Demographics

Kent County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Rhode Island in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.5 percent of Kent County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.8 percent for Rhode Island as a whole. The median household income in Kent County was $61,884 compared to $56,102 for the state of Rhode Island. The poverty rate in Kent County was 16.5 percent compared to 8.9 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Warwick school committee consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Three members are elected by geographic electoral districts and two members are elected at large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was June 25, 2014.[5]
