Two of the five seats on the Warwick Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. Incumbent Jennifer Ahearn did not run for re-election. Incumbent Karen Bachus, along with candidate David Testa, won election to the two seats that were up for election They defeated Dean Johnson, and Daniel Hall in the general election and Nathaniel Cornell and Chadd Huddon in the primary election.[1]

The Warwick school board consisted of five members elected to four-year terms. Three members were elected by geographic electoral districts and two members were elected at large. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. The two at-large seats were on the ballot in 2016.[2]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was June 29, 2016.[3]

Warwick Public Schools is located in central Rhode Island in Kent County. The county seat is East Greenwich. Kent County was home to 164,801 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the third-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,393 students.[8]

Demographics

Kent County underperformed in comparison to Rhode Island as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.4 percent of Kent County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 31.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income in Kent County was $62,976, compared to $56,423 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 9.3 percent, while it was 13.9 percent for the entire state.[7]
