Washington's domestic partnership law goes into effect today

OLYMPIA, Washington: Today, Washington's new domestic partnership law goes into effect. Referendum 71, approved by voters on November 3rd, grants state registered domestic partners in Washington all rights, responsibilities, and obligations granted by or imposed by state law on married couples.[1] The new domestic partnership law, approved by the legislature and governor as SB 5688, was slated to go into effect on July 26, 2009 but was instead placed on the ballot by veto referendum.[2] Gov. Chris Gregoire and Secretary of State Sam Reed officially certified the November 3, 2009 statewide election results on Tuesday, December 1.[3]
