Washington Initiative 987 was intended by its sponsors to qualify for the November 4, 2008 ballot in Washington, but did not ultimately qualify.

I-987 would have mandated extra pay for work outside typical working hours: five percent above an employee's normal wage rate for work earlier than 5 am or later than 9 pm on weekdays, ten percent extra for weekend work during these same hours, and five percent extra for weekend work between 5 am and 9 pm.

Initiative 987 was a citizen-initiated state statute.

The official ballot measure summary was, "This measure would require compensation for employees at not less than 5% over their regular wage rate for weekday work performed after 9:00 p.m. or before 5:00 a.m. Work performed on weekends between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. would be compensated at not less than 5% over their regular wage rate. Work performed on weekends after 9:00 p.m. or before 5:00 a.m. would be compensated at not less than 10% over their regular wage rate."
