Washington Repeal SB 5089 Initiative, or I-998 was intended by its sponsors to qualify for the November 4, 2008 ballot in Washington, but did not ultimately qualify.
It would have repealed Senate Bill 5089, a bill concerning the sales and use tax which was passed by the legislature in 2007. Senate Bill 5089 was related to conforming Washington's tax structure to an altered sales and use tax agreement. SB 5089 imposed new requirements for reporting, collecting, and paying sales tax in Washington.
Initiative 998 was a citizen-initiated state statute.
The official ballot measure summary read:
This measure would repeal a bill passed by the legislature in 2007, which was entitled, "An act relating to conforming Washington's tax structure to the streamlined sales and use tax agreement," thereby repealing numerous statutes and statutory amendments related to the sales and use taxes.
Supporters
The measure was sponsored by Bronn Journey of Sultan, Washington. Journey, a small businessman, said that the new sales tax requirements were overly burdensome to small businesses in the state.
