Wavny Toussaint is a justice on the Supreme Court, 2nd District in New York. She was elected on November 4, 2014, for a term that expires on December 31, 2028.[1]

Previously, Toussaint was a judge of the New York City Civil Court of Kings County. She was elected to this position in 2003. She was assigned to the Kings County Criminal Court from January 2003 to May 2005.[2][3] She was then assigned to the Family Court until December 2007. She also served as an acting justice[4] on the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the 2nd Judicial District.[5]

General: She faced Democratic candidates Evelyn J. Laporte, Kathy King and Lara J. Genovesi, Conservative candidates Philip J. Smallman, Anthony R. Caccamo, Matthew A. Doheny and Dennis W. Houdek, and Working Families candidates Kenneth D. Schaeffer and Kevin R. Bryant, Sr in the general election on November 4, 2014, and won with 12.5 percent of the vote. Candidates competed for four open seats. [1]

Toussaint was re-elected to the civil court after running unopposed in the general election on November 6, 2012.[6][7]

Education

Toussaint received her B.A. degree from the City University of New York at City College in 1979. She then received her J.D. degree from the Howard University School of Law in 1982.[2]

Career

Toussaint began her career in 1982 as assistant counsel for the City of New York Corporation Counsel. In 1985, she joined the law firm of Lester, Schwab, Katz and Dwyer as an associate. She then served as a principal law clerk to a New York judge from 1988 to 1994. In 1994 and 1995, she was a private practice lawyer. She served for a brief time in 1996 as an associate court attorney before becoming a principal law clerk again. She worked in this capacity through 2002. She was then elected in 2003 to the New York City Civil Court of Kings County.[2]
