1. 224 state-level political parties are qualified to appear on ballots in 2019

We've been tracking the number of official, state-level qualified political parties since 2013. This year's update shows 224 ballot-qualified, state-level political parties.  

2. Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for the first three months of its 2019-20 term

The Supreme Court begins its next term in just over two weeks. The court will hear 44 cases this term and has scheduled dates for oral argument for 34 of them.  

3. Florida voters to decide 2020 ballot measure requiring voter citizenship

We're watching to see whether voters in multiple states will decide constitutional amendments making citizenship a requirement to vote. Most recent: in Florida, the Citizen Requirement for Voting Initiative has qualified for the 2020 ballot.  

4. Appeals court ruling paves way for Trump Administration's civil service changes to take effect

Justice Jackson's injunction blocking provisions of the executive orders from taking effect will be lifted by October 2.  

5. Climate action plans at the city level

Half of the 50 largest cities in the U.S. by population have adopted local climate action plans with goals like reducing emissions from municipal operations. Seven of these cities are among the top 10 largest.
